About us
The Story Works is a Bournemouth-based creative charity using storytelling and the arts to empower individuals, strengthen communities, and amplify unheard voices. Our programmes support participants to develop confidence, creativity, and connection through
shared stories.
We are now seeking a committed and financially confident Volunteer Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees. In smaller charities like ours, the Treasurer plays a crucial role and may be the trustee with primary financial knowledge — making this an incredibly important and valued position.
We encourage interested applicants to explore our website to fully understand our mission, projects, and impact.
About The Role
The Treasurer oversees the financial health and integrity of the charity, ensuring robust financial management, compliance, and strategic planning. This is a vital governance role, supporting bookkeeping, financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance with Charity Commission and HMRC requirements. You’ll help ensure our resources are managed responsibly and strategically, enabling us to continue delivering impactful creative programmes in our community.
Daily & Monthly Bookkeeping Oversight
- Maintaining accurate and up-to-date financial records (e.g., Excel, QuickBooks, or Xero).
- Managing the charity’s bank account, processing payments, and acting as a signatory where required.
- Reconciling bank statements with internal financial records.
- Overseeing cash flow, petty cash, and expense claims from staff and volunteers.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Preparing and presenting clear financial reports (income & expenditure, balance sheet) to the Board of Trustees.
- Preparing end-of-year accounts for independent examination or audit.
- Ensuring compliance with Charity Commission regulations and HMRC requirements, including Gift Aid claims.
- Developing and maintaining appropriate financial controls and risk management processes to safeguard charity assets.
Strategy & Budgeting
- Leading the development of the annual budget and monitoring performance against it.
- Advising the Board on reserves policy to ensure long-term sustainability.
- Supporting fundraising by providing financial information for grant applications and reporting to funders.
- Advising trustees on the financial implications of strategic decisions.
Person & Specification
Experience & Skills
- A sound understanding of bookkeeping, accounting, or financial management (qualified accountant not essential!).
- Ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial trustees.
- Attention to detail and commitment to transparency and good governance.
Time Commitment
Typically a few hours per month, with additional time around year-end reporting and during grant applications. Flexibility will depend on organisational needs.
Personal Qualities
- Commitment to the mission and values of The Story Works.
- Willingness to act with reasonable care, skill, and diligence.
- Collaborative and supportive approach to board work.
